Paul Gauguin

Paul Gauguin (First Impressions)
After reading W. Sumerset Maugham's 'The Moon and Sixpence' said to have been based on the life of Paul Gauguin, (can someone tell me why that title?), I decided to read a Gauguin's biography just to see exactly what is meant by "Based on the life of..." means. So naturally I went to the library; free. I checked out Howard Green's book: "Paul Gauguin (First Impressions)"; what luck, it was the only one on the shelf. It is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read and the art work reproduction and colors are just glorious and I am now so turned onto Gauguin's painting and just have to have a copy of this book for my own. The book is wonderfully written and portrays Paul Gauguin as not a very pleasant man, as did Maugham. But how do you separate the Man from his art or his body of work; and should you? What drives someone to dedicate his life to painting and abandon his responsibilities, his children? He's dead now and I can love his art and dislike the man; perhaps great art only comes from great suffering. Can't wait till my copy arrives.

The Perfect War: The War We Couldn't Lose and How We Did
Published in Paperback by Knopf (May, 1988)
Authors: James William Gibson and James William Gibsos
Average review score:

Very informative, thought provoking
Gibson's thesis is that we could never have won the war because we tried to see the Vietnamese on our terms instead of theirs. The Vietnam War was what he refers to as a "Technowar" -- since strength in the Western world has its basis in technology, we often have a tendancy to assume that is the same everywhere. This is what we did with our enemies in Vietnam -- we could not recognize their strengths because they were not like us. Because we had a stronger technological base, we thought there was no way we could lose the war, and ironically this way of thinking was a great contributer to our failures in Vietnam.

Photography by Infrared: Its Principles and Applications
Published in Textbook Binding by John Wiley & Sons (March, 1978)
Authors: Henry Lou, Gibson, Henry Louis Gibson, and Walter Clark
Average review score:

The definitive guide to infrared photography
This book, the most comprehensive reference work on infrared photography, is unfortunately out of print. There's more solid information in this book than in all the pretty coffee-table books on IR photography put together.

Even the most recent edition, 1978, has some outdated data on specific films, but the laws of physics haven't changed, so Gibson's extremely detailed explanations of various phenomena and applications of infrared photography are still as valid as they were originally.

This book really cries out for a new edition, updated with information on digital infrared photography. But for now, if you can only have one book on infrared, this is the one to get.

Pleasant Places: The Rustic Landscape from Breugel to Ruisdael
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (23 March, 2000)
Author: Walter S. Gibson
Average review score:

A Pleasant Book
Walter Gibson's "Pleasant Places" will help you enjoy the quiet and unassuming genre of 17th Century northern European landscape art. The author accepts the works at face value: pleasant images of places the Dutch in particular liked to visit. Gibson does not read religious allegory into them as some art historians do, but he instead shows you how to appreciate the quality of light, the sense of place, and the Dutch character that emerges from Dutch landscape art. He perhaps inadvertently offers some examples where religious interpretations may be more important than he allows, and you do not feel that he is forcing all of the works to fit his premise even though he is steadfast. The book is well-written, and I especially appreciate the author's parenthetical definition of Dutch terms and concepts as they are introduced. In addition, he gently reminds you of their meanings when they are reintroduced in subsequent chapters, so you won't have to hunt through the index and text to find them again. Some of the black-white reproductions of prints are too small, and not clear enough to enable detailed study, but this is a common problem with art history books, and this book will motivate you to visit the nearest art museum to study the genre in any case. Walter Gibson communicates a love and respect for 17th Century northern European landscape art that makes me want to visit Holland and experience it first-hand. Walter Gibson has persuaded me that I will find the Dutch countryside a pleasant place laden with history and wonderful light.

Great Gift Book! Great Price!
I got this as a gift and absolutely love it. It's the small considerate actions that make a difference in life. The examples given are enlightening. I rank this book with up there with my Tao Te Ching, as both give me something to examine inside myself upon reading a page. I plan to get several for coworkers and family members.

Resource of crafts, ideas and recipes for preschoolers
This activity guide brought back memories of my fun preschool years. There are a variety of craft ideas listed, with directions and items (ones easily found in your home) for each project. Especially helpful are the recipes for playdough, paste and fingerpaint! There are lots of ideas for the holidays and different party themes and even lists games, songs and places to visit. Included is a section on fun, basic science. I recommend this book for those who need ideas on how to have fun with their preschooler and for those who are racking their brains trying to remember craft recipes!
